This past Tuesday, April 5, 2016, communities across the country celebrated the fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service, a day dedicated to showing appreciation for the hard work put in by national service volunteers, past and present. The City of Philadelphia has consistently been a leader in promoting national service, celebrating this day of recognition since it was first undertaken in 2013 during Mayor Nutter’s administration. Current Philadelphia Mayor Kenney continued the tradition last week for his first event, joining over 2800 mayors around the nation in celebrating the accomplishments of past and present AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Peace Corps members.

Philly Fellows had representation past and present in two award categories. First to be recognized was Philly Fellows alum and Fairmount CDC Executive Director Kevin Moran in the category of Mayor’s Award for Distinguished Contribution to the City of Philadelphia by an Alumni of AmeriCorps Service. Kevin served with Philly Fellows from 2009-2010 as the Public Relations and Communications Specialist at Fairmount CDC and later returned as the organization’s Executive Director. Among several talented finalists, Kevin was name the overall winner in his category.

Current Philly Fellows VISTA Leader Shannon Macika was also a finalist in the new award category for the Mayor’s Award for Distinguished Group Service Project. Shannon, along with staff and former AmeriCorps VISTA members from partner organizations including the Philadelphia Food Policy Advisory Council and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, was recognized for her work on the Philly Food Finder project, an online food resources toolkit and map with consolidated information about how to get affordable, healthy food in Philadelphia.

Thank you to Mayor Kenney for continuing the city’s commitment to celebrating national service. We are proud of our Philly Fellows members for what they have achieved and look forward to even greater accomplishments to come!
