Meet Our Fellows: Olivia Ortiz

Ever wonder what it's like to be a member of Philly Fellows? In the 'Meet Our Fellows' series, we'll introduce you to our current fellows, their projects, and how they are benefiting from the Philly Fellows program. This post features Olivia Ortiz, who is serving as the Community Outreach Coordinator at the Philadelphia Parks Alliance. Name: Olivia Ortiz Hometown: Canton, Georgia University: Swarthmore College Major: Mathematics (minor in Environmental Studies) How did you decide to become a Philly Fellow? I had initially applied to the program because I didn't quite know what I wanted to be doing after graduation, so staying nearby and doing something vaguely environmental or food [...]

Back & better than ever: welcome to the newest Philly Fellows!

The 2016-2017 Philly Fellows Although it's been awhile since we've had a new blog post, this summer has been busy with activity at Philly Fellows! After saying goodbye to our 2015-2016 fellows, we welcomed our newest cohort for move-in to the Philly Fellows houses on July 17. With the new fellows' move-in date falling on the same day as move-out for our previous fellows, there was a lot happening at once. However, everyone arrived ready to adapt and "get things done" (in traditional AmeriCorps style!), so this new cohort got off to a great start. After attending AmeriCorps VISTA Pre-Service Orientation [...]

Another successful ‘Give Kids A Smile Day’ for PCCY

We love to highlight the work that our Philly Fellows are doing for their host agencies. While no two days are alike, the "Day in the Life" blog post series aims to highlight the types of projects and events that our members work on. This post was written by Chris Capron, who is currently serving as the Child Health Outreach Specialist at Public Citizens for Children and Youth. From March 22-25, 2016, PCCY coordinated its 13th year of Give Kids A Smile Day. The first Give Kids A Smile Day was held in 2002 in St. Louis, MO, and soon the American Dental Association worked to [...]

Philly Fellows alum wins one of Mayor’s national service awards

Thanks to AmeriCorps, Senior Corps & returning Peace Corps members for your service! #MayorsDayPHL #Mayors4Service — Jim Kenney (@PhillyMayor) April 5, 2016     This past Tuesday, April 5, 2016, communities across the country celebrated the fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service, a day dedicated to showing appreciation for the hard work put in by national service volunteers, past and present. The City of Philadelphia has consistently been a leader in promoting national service, celebrating this day of recognition since it was first undertaken in 2013 during Mayor Nutter's administration. Current Philadelphia Mayor Kenney continued the tradition last week for his first event, [...]

Philly Fellows VISTA Leader reflects on her national service experience

As we approach the 4th Annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service, our VISTA Leader Shannon Macika was coincidentally interviewed for the SERVE Philadelphia VISTAs blog to reflect on her experience as a second year national service member. Prior to arriving at Philly Fellows, Shannon served from June 2014- June 2015 as the Child Hunger Outreach Coordinator for the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. In that role, she was a member of both the SERVE Philadelphia VISTA Corps and the national Anti-Hunger & Opportunity Corps. Here are a few of the thoughts she shared on her experiences as an AmeriCorps VISTA [...]

Looking back: 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ’s legacy, volunteers across the country made #MLKDay a day on, instead of a day off, to strengthen their communities. Our Philly Fellows were no exception! The Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service is the largest King Day event in the nation, so there were plenty of service opportunities across the city for the Philly Fellows to join in on with their host agencies and with other organizations. Photo courtesy of the South Philly Review Philly Fellow Hannah Armbruster was one of our fellows serving with her host agency. Hannah, who serves [...]
